Seniors Frequently Experience Balance Problems

August 15, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

The statistics of older adults taking a fall each year are alarming, and consequences can impact the person’s independence, or in the worst case, be deadly. Experts say as we age, our bodies may start to feel less stable due to things like a loss of muscle mass, lack of flexibility and slower reflexes. Poor balance and dizziness can also be a result of medical problems including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, poor vision, thyroid, nerves, or blood vessels as well as medications.

Another culprit interfering with balance is inner ear problems. The labyrinth is a part of the inner ear that controls balance and when it becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause problems including vertigo. The condition called Labyrinthitis generally is a result of other issues such as head injuries, viral or bacterial infections, and circulatory system conditions like strokes or low blood pressure.

The National Institute on Aging says families and caregivers should be on the lookout for an older person complaining of unsteadiness; the feeling the room is spinning or moving; confusion; blurry vision; and falling. To determine the cause of the symptoms of lightheadedness or dizziness as well as the best treatments available, consult with your doctor, and if needed, seek the care of a specialist.

Your doctor can provide information regarding exercises targeted at improving balance, strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility. The Harvard Medical School reports walking can help build lower-body strength, an important element of good balance and is safe for most people but be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

Along with getting medical care for balance issues, experts say avoid walking in dimly lit or dark spaces, wear properly fitted footwear, and use a cane or walker if you need more support. Your home should be modified with handrails in the bathroom and more lights on stairways. Repair loose railings and uneven porch steps; and remove floor mats that affect elevation.

Is Your Parent Struggling to Live Independently?

August 13, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one during a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parents are not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed or chair), continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, a 55+ community in Colorado Springs, we offer assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. Moreover, all residents are treated to a delicious, healthy restaurant-style dining service, wellness programs and activities, and sponsored senior living communities outings and events.

Our beautiful home has suites in a range of floor plans which are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and private climate control.  In addition, we offer respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays to see if we are a good fit.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information and to schedule a tour.

By Age 75, Almost Half of Seniors Have Difficulty Hearing

August 11, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

The Harvard Health Publishing reports that approximately one in three people age 65 to 74 have some level of hearing loss. By age 75, almost half of seniors have difficulty hearing. Experts say while common, ignoring a decline in hearing can have negative consequences.

One issue is evidence linking age-related hearing loss to a higher risk of cognitive decline. Researchers say hearing loss may impair new nerve cell creation in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory region. Moreover, hearing loss is believed to increase a person’s risk for depression and social isolation; and is also linked to a person being less active.

The Harvard article says if you think you need a hearing test you probably do. Dr. James Naples, assistant professor of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, explains it is hard to “differentiate the cause of one’s hearing loss and its severity without an evaluation.”

Age-related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis, can be caused by several things with the most common being a change in the inner ear that alters the nerve pathways from the ear to the brain. The Mayo Clinic suggests getting a base-line hearing test by the age of 65. Talk to your primary care provider as they may have the equipment to schedule a test or can refer you to a certified audiologist to evaluate your hearing.

The CDC explains a mild hearing loss typically allows most speech sounds other than very soft ones to come through. A moderate hearing loss may mean the person is unable to hear most speech at normal levels. Doctors say age-related hearing loss and noise-induced hearing loss generally affect both ears. It is important to let your doctor know if you experience pain, vertigo or ringing in one ear as it could indicate other problems.

Remember that hearing aids can literally be life changing. Not only do they reduce the risk of dementia, but also improve a person’s working memory, concentration and attention.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows senior living communities we offer seniors a carefree lifestyle to safely age in place with a range of care services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. Alzheimer's Disease & Sundowning

August 08, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains, “sundowner’s syndrome” or “sundowning” is a set of symptoms or behaviors that are found in some people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The syndrome’s symptoms include agitation and anxiety, and it occurs in the later part of the day and evening with marked behavior changes in the person.

Fred Kobylarz, MD, co-director of the Center for Healthy Aging at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School says it is not a disease, but rather a symptom of dementia. While doctors do not know the cause of sundowning, they believe it may be a “combination of hormonal changes, brain deterioration or damage that has occurred, environmental factors, disruption to a person’s circadian rhythm, and more.”

The syndrome may start as early as 1 p.m. in some people but usually is later in the day. Along with agitation and anxiety; symptoms can include things like pacing, disorientation, hallucinations and problems sleeping. Other behavior changes may include angry outbursts and aggressive, sometimes even physical altercations. Others just want to be closer to a person they trust as needed reassurance. Some people do not remember what happened earlier in the day and even forget they just ate dinner and want to eat again.

Experts say in some cases sundowning starts before a person has had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. However, it is not only found in people with dementia as some older adults exhibit symptoms during an illness or period of delirium.

Doctors recommend families who see symptoms of sundowning to consult with their healthcare provider to rule out other causes. Guidelines for managing the syndrome include setting up a schedule that adheres to their needs and maintaining a consistent daily routine to reduce confusion and fatigue. During morning hours encourage the person to do activities that increase their exposure to natural light to help support better sleep-wake cycles. Avoid over stimulating the person in the evenings and don’t subject them to crowds, bright screens or loud noises.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 19 suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to enhance our residents’ freedom and fully accommodate the disposition and behaviors of those with dementia. Each resident receives an individualized care plan and participates in meaningful wellness programs and purposeful activities.  Our programs include a variety of exercise options, music, life skills, art, special celebrations and other events. Do Not Define Yourself by Your Limitations

August 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living Facility

While growing older can bring a new appreciation of life, it can also bring a series of challenges including a decline in health that impacts a person’s mobility. This can be due to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity. Other causes are diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well as profound vision or hearing loss that interferes with abilities and requires people to rethink some of their lifelong activities.

The good news is many of the things’ people enjoy doing can still be done – they just may need some modifications. During this phase of life, you may discover new activities you enjoy just as much as the things you had to let go. Most importantly, experts say do not define yourself by your limitations.

Rather, they remind seniors that staying active and engaged has many benefits including boosting physical and mental health; and provides people with a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. It has also been shown to improve memory and slow cognitive decline. Studies find seniors who stay socially active can even lower blood pressure, elevate mood and reduce anxiety and stress.

Some activities enjoyed by seniors with limited mobility include things like gardening in raised-beds, chair yoga, Tai-chi, water aerobics and low-impact resistance training.  Creative pursuits such as painting or drawing, playing a musical instrument and learning a new cuisine; as well as games such as trivia or bridge bring meaning and joy to someone regardless of their physical limitations.

Senior living communities are great places to help seniors find purpose and companionship, along with the peace of mind that comes with knowing someone is always around to lend a hand if needed.  For assisted living in Colorado Springs, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows. Our 45 assisted living suites are well-designed to maximize space, and residents enjoy a whole host of resort-style amenities, senior care services, wellness programs and activities.

In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides care for those with memory impairment with compassionate, personalized support and services. Contact us for more information and to schedule a tour. We look forward to hearing from you.

Modifications in Lifestyle May Lower the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

August 04, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, and every year more than a million people are diagnosed with the disease. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports in 2021, 38.4 million Americans, or 11.6% of the population, had diabetes. Of that number 2 million had type 1 diabetes, which includes more than 300,000 children and adolescents.

Seniors aged 65 years and older make up a large percentage of Americans with the disease at 29.2% or 16.5 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). Diabetes can be deadly and was the 8th leading cause of death in 2021. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of vision problems, heart attacks, nerve damage and stroke. In 2022, the CDC estimated the cost of diabetes was $412.9 billion.

Prediabetes is another huge problem and numbers from 2021 report 97.6 million Americans aged 18 and older are affected. It is a chronic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. While it carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it isn’t inevitable. Studies show prediabetes can be reversed or the risk mitigated with lifestyle changes such as diet, medications, and early detection.

Yale Medicine endocrinologist, Anika Anam, MD, explains, “Prediabetes goes hand in hand with metabolic syndrome, the term for a condition that includes hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.” She adds each of those conditions raises the risk for serious issues including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The CDC’s national Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), finds “people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight—5 to 7% (10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds, for example)—with the help of a structured lifestyle-change program cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.” In addition, experts say at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day can not only improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, but aid in weight loss. Cutting out added sugars, eating more complex carbs (vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains), and increasing protein are other recommended lifestyle changes as is reducing stress.

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows may be your answer.  Our community of senior living provides residents with tasty, nutritional meals as well as suitable exercise programs and activities designed to promote physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Items to Avoid Leaving in a Hot Car

August 01, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

As summer temperatures heat up, there are some things you should not keep stored in your vehicle.  One of those items is sunscreen. While it is handy to have it available to reapply when needed, experts say too much exposure to heat can start to degrade the effectiveness of the SPF protection in the product. The best way to get around this is to apply sunscreen at home, and if you need to have it on hand, carry it in your handbag that will go with you once you get out of the car.

Another thing many of us want to have with us in the hot weather is water. Many people are in the habit of storing plastic water bottles in the car but again experts say it is not a good idea. When exposed to heat, plastic bottles containing BPA can leach chemicals that are harmful to our health. In addition, there is a chance of a plastic water bottle sitting in direct sunlight getting hot enough to spark a fire.  High heat can also affect the flavor of carbonated soda, and there have been cases of cans or bottles exploding due to high temperatures creating pressure inside the container.

Batteries and devices such as phones, cameras and laptops with batteries (and other components) do not do well in hot vehicles either as they can leak and fail. Credit cards are also susceptible to high heat as they may warp or become deformed and unusable. Aerosol cans containing hairspray, paint or other products are labeled safe for storage under 120 degrees Fahrenheit and could explode in higher temperatures, which is possible in a parked car sitting in the sun on hot days.

Other items that can be affected by high heat include prescription and non-prescription medications. Experts say medications should be stored under 77 degrees (unless it is a medication that needs to be refrigerated) as heat can cause it to lose its effectiveness. If you do need to have items in a hot car, it is helpful to have an insulated bag or chest to keep something cool for a short time. Moreover, most importantly remember it is not safe to leave children, pets or the elderly in a car parked in the sun for any length of time.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers outstanding assisted living in Colorado Springs. Suites are available in a choice of studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans which just need your personal furnishings to make it your own. Residents enjoy a carefree lifestyle with all-day restaurant-style dining; hospitality and senior care services; and wellness programs and activities. Inexpensive Upgrades to Help Seniors Sell their Home

July 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Looking to sell your home but do not want to invest in pricey remodeling? For many seniors, their house is already paid off and they are just looking for an easy sell. The following inexpensive upgrades can add value to help update a home.

Realtors bring an experienced eye to knowing how to make an older home an easier sale without spending thousands and weigh-in on fairly affordable projects (typically under $500) that yield results and are easy-to-do. One of the first suggestions is to paint the front door a nice accent color to the exterior. The job only requires a small amount of paint and some time. Also you may get away without painting the entire exterior of the home by touching up areas that are peeling or looking particularly old.

Most of us have heard the word “curb appeal” and realtors say it really does matter. Abbey Drummond of Windermere Real Estate in Salt Lake City, Utah, explains prospective buyers can be put off by the look of the home even before they go inside. She says, “Anything from fresh mulch, updated house numbers, a new mailbox, or a bold front door color improves the curb appeal.” Additionally clean up garden beds, remove old leaves from the yard and have the exterior power washed and windows cleaned.

If a kitchen remodel is out of the budget, experts say a new kitchen faucet can really upgrade the look. The same goes for replacing outdated light fixtures with more modern, efficient lighting. This is especially helpful if all the light fixtures are builder quality and all look the same.

For rooms that are painted in bold colors, realtors say it is better to repaint in more neutral colors. Also, touch-up paint on scuffed and dirty walls and floorboards as it can really freshen up a home. Another realtor tip is to replace electric plug outlet covers with new ones. Covers cost a few dollars and are easy to put on. Along the same lines, upgrade cabinet pulls to refresh a kitchen or bathroom. However, bring along an old pull to match up with the new ones to ensure they fit the predrilled holes on your cabinets.

Deep cleaning rugs and carpets, and wood floors not only makes them look better but will help your home smell better. While a bigger expense, replacing carpet or having hardwood floors refinished yields great results. Remember, presenting your home in the best light possible can result in a quick sale.

If you are looking for senior living Littleton, CO families trust, please take a look at MorningStar of Littleton. Our senior living community offers 65 assisted living suites in studio and one-and-two-bedroom floorplans. For holistic Alzheimer’s care, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides a choice of 20 studio or companion suites. Thoughtful Gifts for a Loved One With Dementia

July 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

We all like to bring our elderly parents or loved ones a gift to show them just how much we care about them. It is often hard to know what to give to a senior, and especially difficult if a loved one is living with dementia.  Experts suggest you help them find ways to reminisce about their lives and accomplishments, and give them things that will bring a smile to their face and some joy into their life.

Many ideas for someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease include personalized gifts.  One such gift is a talking photo book that allows you to record your own personal commentary to go along with each photograph.  This can be a fun book to sit and enjoy with your family member as it helps to trigger memories and conversation.  Many companies offer such books, and prices typically vary with the number of photos and recording time available.

Buying an interactive book featuring vivid photographs and large print on a subject your mom or dad love such as animals or flowers can also promote conversation and provide a way to spend relaxing time together.  To ease stress or agitation, you may want to consider getting them a fiddle muff.  A fiddle muff can provide comfort and warmth as well as activity to promote increased hand flexibility and brain stimulation.

Another meaningful gift is a cozy, customized blanket filled with photos of the grandkids or a beloved family pet.  On the Internet you can find companies that will do a collage of family photos or a singular one in a variety of materials.  Many of the blankets have surprisingly sharp images and can be machine washed and dried.

What are Personalized Care Plans?

July 21, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you have been researching assisted living options, you may have come across this term: Personalized Care Plans. While it may sound clinical, personalized care plans are one of the most important parts of the experience. They function as a roadmap that ensures each individual receives the right amount of support and care on their  journey. The plans are necessary for proper support that respects senior independence, health, and lifestyle.

What is a Personalized Care Plan in Assisted Living?

A personalized care plan is a uniquely designed and customizable senior care outline made to support a senior with their specific needs, health concerns, wants, and goals. These senior care plans are collaboratively developed, leaning on the help of medical providers, family members, and the senior themselves.

Rather than providing uniform care to every resident, MorningStar Senior Living believes in the necessity of designing personalized care plans for each senior. This direction ensures that every senior feels comfortable within their daily routine and has their health needs met while feeling independent and relaxed.

Why Does Personalized Care Matter?

Every senior has a special set of concerns. Developing personalized care plans allows staff to offer more successful support. Personalized care plans reduce the risk of medication mishaps, unmanaged distress, isolation, and distrust. Assisted living that offers personalized options promotes a sense of autonomy and comfort. Families receive peace of mind knowing their loved one is supported in their care journey, and seniors feel cared for while still having the freedom to be who they are.

Seniors and Night Driving

July 21, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

Many older adults complain about being unable to see clearly while driving at night. Experts explain that night blindness, also known as nyctalopia, makes it difficult to see well in dim or dark settings as the person’s eyes are unable to adjust to changes in brightness or to detect lights. Driving at night with this condition is not only a problem but is dangerous, and it is more common in seniors.

The condition is caused when the iris, the colored part of the eye, and the retina aren’t working well together. The iris has muscles that widen or narrow the opening of the pupil to adjust how much light enters the eyes. The retina has light-detecting cones and rods, which manage vision in dim light. When the irises’ muscles don’t react well; pupils can dilate and let in too much light or remain too small and make it hard to see in dim light.

A number of things can exacerbate night blindness including something we cannot control – old age. Dr. Isabel Deakins, an optometrist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear, explains as we age, “”The number of rods in our eyes diminishes, pupils get smaller, and the muscles of the irises weaken.”

Other conditions that can cause night blindness include glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye syndrome and certain medications. There are treatments for glaucoma, cataracts and dry eyes. For other people, a stronger pair of glasses or ones that reduce glare may help.

Other strategies to improve night vision are to routinely clean the windshield, side mirrors and headlights. If you wear glasses, make sure they are clean. Be sure to dim the interior dashboard lights for night driving and use the night setting for the rear view mirror. If you are having trouble seeing in dim or dark settings, you need to stop driving and make an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Understanding Dementia

July 16, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

Many of us, especially seniors, have heard or known someone with Alzheimer’s disease and have an idea of the devastation it causes. While there are other types of diseases categorized as dementia, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. You should know dementia is not actually a specific disease but refers to a decline in a person’s mental ability to such a degree it interferes with their daily life.

It is also important to understand dementia is not a normal condition of aging but rather caused by damage to brain cells that affect a person’s memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills including an ability to communicate. There are several types of clinical dementia including: Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; dementia with Lewy Body; and frontotemporal dementia. Mixed dementia is the term used when a person has both Alzheimer’s and another form of dementia, which is causing their mental decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association says the “most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is trouble remembering new information because the disease typically impacts the part of the brain associated with learning first.” As the disease progresses, the person is robbed of many other abilities such as speaking, swallowing and walking.

To help get the proper diagnosis and rule out other causes that may be treatable such as side effects from a medication, it is important to see your doctor. If warranted, they may have you see a specialist that can do further testing.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. We are a team of compassionate professionals who feel privileged to care for our special residents. Enhancing Health and Well-being in Older Adults

July 11, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact, studies find people who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies,  “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up to date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health is to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior community that allows residents to live life to the fullest. Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities are designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Well-designed suites for assisted living and memory care are available in a variety of floor plans featuring kitchenettes, handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and include weekly housekeeping.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

It’s Estimated Over One Million Americans Are Living With Parkinson’s Disease

July 09, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports that over one million people in the United States are estimated to be living with Parkinson’s disease; and that number is expected to increase to 1.2 million by 2030. However, they say the actual number of people with PD is likely to be higher as many cases go undiagnosed.

The Mayo Clinic explains Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Currently there is no cure but medications can improve symptoms, and in some cases, surgery may also improve symptoms.

Parkinson’s symptoms typically start slowly, and one of the first things a person may notice is a slight tremor in one hand. Called resting tremors, they occur when the person’s hands are at rest, and the first tremors may only be the shaking of one finger. It is important to note that not all tremors are caused by Parkinson’s and you need to consult with your healthcare provider to see if it is Parkinson’s or something else causing the condition.

Stiffness or rigidity, and slowed movement known as bradykinesia are other common symptoms of the disease. Rigidity occurs in the shoulders, trunk, limbs and neck. Bradykinesia includes slowness in everyday movement and tasks such as walking, speech and eating. Another common sign of Parkinson’s is a change in the person’s handwriting. Small handwriting called micrographia occurs because of changes in the parts of the brain that control motor skills. As the disease progresses, people report problems with sleeping, mood swings and changes in cognitive skills as well as eye and vision issues.

The risk of Parkinson’s increases with age and most cases are diagnosed after the age of 60. Men are more likely to have the disease, and there is a small heredity link. Moreover, ongoing exposure to pesticides and herbicides may increase your risk.

For exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Mountain Shadows.  Along with a choice of stylish floor plans, our residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals served all day in our full-service dining room, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information on senior living.
