Maintaining Good Balance as You Age

Falls among senior citizens are all too common, and in many cases, threaten a person’s independence and way of life. Injuries from falls include to the head, hip fractures, and in extreme cases lead to death; and poor balance is one of the reasons people fall.

Treating Hearing Loss May Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia. 

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia. 

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.  

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

Some Lifestyle Habits Can Increase Your Risk of Developing Arthritis

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout. 

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active. 

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint.  Experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints. 

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good hygiene and dental visits.  

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Declutter Responsibly

If we have lived in a house or apartment for a while, clutter can start to build and feel overwhelming. When the task seems too big, you may be unsure on how to begin decluttering. This can be a good time to turn to the experts. 

The first tip is to narrow down an area to start in. Have garbage bags ready for things to throw away, donate or give to someone you know. Now focus on items you have more of than you need. To reduce clutter in landfills, check the internet to find places that accept various household items. Old linens and blankets are generally welcomed at animal shelters. Home for Habitat locations will usually accept working appliances, usable furniture and construction materials. Your old phone can be put into the hands of someone that will use it or safely recycle by various organizations. 

Thought your old iPod was useless? There are organizations that give working iPods to lift the spirits of people with Alzheimer’s and other illnesses with the gift of music. Things from old yoga mats to sports equipment can be recycled or given a new home. Some charities specialize in using donated business clothing to give a boost to people starting their careers. Safety Tips for Using a Walker

If you are at the point in life where you are not as stable as you used to be, have balance problems, arthritis or leg weakness; a mobility aid such as a walker could help keep you moving and lessen your chance of a fall. The first thing to do is work with a physical therapist or your healthcare provider to discuss the best type of walker for your personal needs and comfort. There are several fit points to consider as well as styles.

One common choice is a standard walker with four rubber-tipped legs and no wheels. Experts say it provides the most stability but has the drawback of having to pick it up to move. Other choices include walkers with wheels. A two-wheel walker has the wheels on the front two legs and can be helpful for those who have trouble picking up a standard walker. Four–wheel walkers may help those very unsteady on their feet but at the same time, can be a bit less stable. It may be safer to try using a four-wheeler with a seat.   

Another important step in getting the proper walker is the height of the arms. The Mayo Clinic suggests stepping into the walker with your shoulders relaxed and upright. Elbows should be able to comfortably bend at 15 degrees. Other tips include remembering to stand upright when using as it is easier on your back, and to move one step at a time. Step into the walker with each step rather than walking behind it. 

Use caution when using a walker on a slippery or wet surface, and even carpet requires extra care. Just as you do when you walk on your own, be sure to wear sensible low-heeled shoes that fit well. Experts say laces help customize the shoe to the foot.

Is Cognitive Decline an Inevitable Part of Aging?

The recent World Alzheimer Report 2024 published by Alzheimer’s Disease International states eighty percent of the general public think dementia is a normal part of aging. More troubling is that 65 percent of health care professionals believe the same. While the Alzheimer’s Association estimates 1 out of 9 Americans age 65 and older suffer from Alzheimer’s, remember that leaves a greater number of us not getting the disease.  

Howard Fillit, M.D., clinical professor of geriatrics, medicine and neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, explains, “Certain abilities —processing speed, for example — slow down [around] the age of 20 or so, when processing speed peaks; to age 70 or 80, when processing speed can be down as much as 50 to 70 percent.” On the flip side, seniors typically have superior vocabulary and decision-making skills. 

The National Institutes of Health recently funded a study to discover if individuals close to someone with dementia looked at it differently. They concluded that “people with a family member with dementia were less likely to believe that dementia is preventable and less confident about the effectiveness of taking preventive actions.” These unfavorable perceptions discouraged them from engaging in healthy behaviors linked to a decrease in a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s. Prior studies also found family members of a person with dementia were more reluctant to get early screening, which is too bad as today’s treatments are best started in the early stages of the disease. 

While it is true a direct relative of someone with Alzheimer’s is more likely to develop the disease than those without a first-degree relative, it is not a given. Family genetics are not the only cause of Alzheimer’s. Known risk factors for dementia include obesity, chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. A report from the Lancet Commission estimated that up to 40% of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing such risk factors. The Alzheimer’s Association cautions any person considering genetic testing should receive genetic counseling before a test is ordered and once results are obtained. Discuss with your healthcare provider about what is right for you.

When is it Time for a Memory Care Community?

However, they also stress there may come a time when the disease progresses to a stage where the person’s safety and physical well-being is in jeopardy and more care is needed.

Bone Loss is Common in Older Adults

The Mayo Clinic explains our bodies constantly absorb and replace bone tissue. When a person has osteoporosis, their body is removing old bone but not keeping up with making new bone. Early warning signs of osteoporosis include bone fractures, lost height, curved back, sudden back pain and gastrointestinal problems. Foods containing calcium include dairy and soy, fish and green leafy vegetables like kale. Additionally, many foods are fortified with calcium so check labels. Protein is found in meat, fish, eggs, soy and dairy products, beans, lentils, and legumes as well as seeds and nuts. Experts recommend people over age 70 increase their uptake of vitamin D to 800 IU daily, which they can also obtain from supplements. 

Consuming a lot of salt should be avoided as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports overconsumption of salt can cause the kidneys to excrete calcium. Studies indicate consuming caffeine in coffee or caffeinated drinks can additionally interfere with the body’ absorption of calcium and it is recommended older adults limit their coffee intake to no more than three cups a day. Limiting alcohol also helps maintain bone health. Another component to maintaining or building stronger bones includes weight-bearing exercises.

Getting Enough Sleep is Vital to Good Health

Getting enough sleep should also be an essential part of an athlete’s training regimen as adequate sleep helps to improve both physical and mental performance.  A good night’s rest has been proven to refuel athletes and give them more intensity and energy as well as faster speed.  Doctors recommend an average of 7 to 9 hours for most adults and up to 10 hours for athletes. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds that getting proper sleep each night allows the body’s blood pressure to regulate, and helps to reduce sleep apnea and promote better overall heart health.  A study even suggests that inadequate sleep can result in a reduced ability to empathize with others, while another found a link between lack of sleep and depression.  Others report inflammation and sleep may be linked including a study published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology that suggests “a link between sleep deprivation and inflammatory bowel diseases.” 

To get a good night’s sleep, experts recommend going to bed around the same time each night and to avoid sleeping in later than you need to.  Try to get plenty of exercise during the day and reduce stress with exercise or other therapies.

How to Better Connect With Someone With Alzheimer’s Disease

A Yale Medicine neurologist offers advice on how to better connect with someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Carolyn Fredericks, MD., a specialist in cognitive and behavioral conditions, including Alzheimer’s, says it is not always helpful to correct a person with Alzheimer’s, and in most cases, it is nicer to just “enter their reality.” 

Fredericks suggests instead of correcting the person when they get your name or someone else’s name incorrect, just go with it. After all, what difference does it really make? Also, you don’t need to remind the person you answered their question an hour ago. Let it go and repeat the answer.  

Going along with what the person says, and remaining calm and encouraging will help them remain calm. Research indicates someone with Alzheimer’s is typically most anxious about making mistakes or forgetting something they should know in the early stages of the disease. Moreover, when they repeat a question, they are not trying to be difficult, so there is no reason to make them feel uncomfortable. If the person is unduly worried about something that is not true such as thinking things that go “missing” are being stolen, show compassion and focus on helping them find the items.   

As long-term memories are more intact in people with Alzheimer’s and often not affected until the later stages of the disease, spending time reminiscing about things from their childhood can be fun for you and the person. Even in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, people find joy in listening to their favorite music or participating in creative projects. Be sure they get some exercise each day as it helps with anxiety and sleep. Lastly, Dr. Frederick says it is important for the family to construct a safety plan and recognize when it is no longer safe for the person to drive or use the stove when he/she is alone.
